She was like a gangster,” says Jeremiah Jenne, a historian who leads visitors on walking tours around the Summer Palace, where he points out 500-year-old juniper and cypress trees, and paint-faded pavilions like the Hall of Dispelling Clouds, which was renovated in 1895 for her 60th birthday extravaganza.Ĭixi had the Summer Palace rebuilt after an invading European army looted and burnt the original, which, with its jewel-encrusted furniture and over-the-top silks, was said to be on par with Versailles. Chang gives us a complex, riveting portrait of Cixi through a reign as long as that of her fellow Empress, Victoria, whom. When her boy died, Cixi designated a young nephew as Emperor, continuing her reign till her death in 1908. “She had one of the most ruthless, savvy political minds. Untrained and untaught, the two studied history and politics together, ruling the huge nation from behind a curtain. Her endeavours to preserve the imperial family above all else make for comparisons with Michael Corleone, the fictional Mafia boss in the Godfather films. “Cixi is still a negative character,” he says. But Zhang says his positive portrait made little impact. Empress Dowager Cixi : the concubine who launched modern China / 'In this groundbreaking biography, Jung Chang vividly describes how Cixi fought against monumental obstacles to change China. He argues that she was held back by her lack of education, a given at the time because she was a woman, and that she should be given credit for trying to make amends for her mistakes at the end of her rule.

I think some of the lower reviews were from people expecting a modern-day style novel, and it’s not. Love reaches all of the characters, no matter how hard they push it away. But it’s also a tale of the power of love and how much it pervades our lives, no matter how much we try to push it away. The pair are the last of the Villarca line and the story then begins to tell, from their own perspectives, the story of their family and how the curse, known as “Her,” came to be.Īs I’ve said, this novel is very much in the style of classic gothic novels and is a dark, sad tale which will rip your heart out in places. The novel begins with Iris, a young girl whose father doesn’t allow her to venture outside the confines of their home, Rawblood, or have friends, since their family is haunted by a strange curse which will kill them if they invite love into their lives. If you’re looking for happy endings, please find another book.īut I seriously couldn’t put this book down once I got into it. And please note: it is dark and depressing, just like that novel. It’s a gothic novel that gave me a Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein-like vibe. “The Girl From Rawblood” is one of those books. I’m so excited to finally be able to share my love of “The Girl from Rawblood” with you all! The book is out now – don’t forget to check out the preview and giveaway for your chance to win a free copy!Įvery so often, I read a book that is so good, when I’ve finished it, I find myself wanting to read another book just like it. Why he is sought out I will leave to the reader. It quickly becomes that way though as retired FBI agent Terry McCaleb is sought out by the sister of a woman who is killed in what appears to be a robbery with a murder thrown mixed in. Blood Work at first blush is not a serial killer fact pattern. Unlike other authors who focus on crime fiction, Connelly’s writing is not the cop procedural novel that is so intense, and therefore to me, too heavy on the cop lingo that it borders on being a novel written in slang with little plot or character development. It is the 3rd book that I have read that was written by Michael Connelly.Īs usual, Michael Connelly is a storyteller with a gift of grabbing onto the reader by the front of their shirt with their fist and yanking them into his writing. For now, here is my review of: Blood Work. Later, when I review The Secret Piano, I will elaborate what occasioned the break and why I’m back. Michael Connelly’s Blood Work: A Review December 18, 2014Īfter a hiatus, I’m back to reviewing books I have read. Yes, they showed some of the things I have read and made me say, “I’ve read that part.” I don’t know if it’s a good thing, but it only made the viewers appreciate the book more than the film. Since the movie was adapted from a bestselling book, everyone (including me) is expecting that the movie would come close to the book’s charm. The movie ABNKKBSNPLAko?!, directed by Mark Meily, was adapted from Bob Ong’s bestselling book, ABNKKBSNPLAko?! (Mga Kwentong Chalk ni Bob Ong) with Jericho Rosales as Roberto Ong, the main character with his BFFs, Vandolph Quizon and Meg Imperial and of course Andi Eigenmann as “Special Someone”. No, it’s not Thursday, but a time for reminiscing the 80s, 90s and our high school days. It seems like somebody’s shouting this inside the cinema as soon as the film started. “You know what it is! It’s Throwback time!” Meanwhile, Clef, Sancia’s intelligent key, recovers his lost memories of how the world was once shattered by hierophants. Wives Sancia and Berenice, senior scrivers, try diplomacy to unite the scattered surviving colonies against the mentally unified horde from their former hometown, even if this entails allying with Crasedes, their former archrival. The resurrected hierophant Crasedes Magnus holds out, but barely, against joining this group mind while the scrappy spell designers of the Foundryside search for a haven for their refugee fleet. The people of the former city of Tevanne have become a collective intelligence searching for a doorway that will allow it to restart reality. Gods collide in the high octane finale to Bennett’s epic fantasy Founders Trilogy, set eight years after the events of Shorefall. I know Warren Oates isn't always classified as a tough-guy, but the important thing here is that he was a bad motherfucker, and there's even a line in the book where somebody basically tells Roy he resembles Warren Oates. Nolte, of course, would have done outstanding work. Obviously Roy and Rocky are the two big roles, and you need a brutish, atavistic man to play Roy, an old-school tough guy possessing range, with a voice that can be played like a box guitar. Starring Nick Nolte circa 1985 as Roy (I'd also take Warren Oates,'76), Natalie Portman circa 2002 as Rocky, Harvey Keitel as Sam Ptiko, Annabella Sciorra as Loraine, and, uh, Marisa Tomei as Carmen. In my fanboy imagination, though, I suppose I'd fantasy cast something like this: Sam Peckinpah circa 1972 to direct. We've sold the movie option to a production company that's very enthusiastic about the work, so hopefully a movie will go forward. Here he shares some ideas about adapting his new novel Galveston for the big screen: His work has been a finalist for the National Magazine Award, and his story collection Between Here and the Yellow Sea was named by Poets & Writer’s Magazine as one of the top five fiction debuts of the year. Stephens | Finding Love Under the Northern Lights My wife came home from church one day and said, “I want to take that Sunday School class on the Enneagram.” I’d heard of it, but I knew nothing about it. Not only will you learn more about yourself, but you will also start to see the world through other people's eyes, understanding how and why people think, feel, and act the way they do.īeginning with changes you can start making today, the wisdom of the Enneagram can help take you further along into who you really are-leading you into places of spiritual discovery you would never have found on your own, and paving the way to the wiser, more compassionate person you want to become. The Enneagram is an ancient personality typing system with an uncanny accuracy in describing how human beings are wired, both positively and negatively. Do you want help figuring out who you are and why you're stuck in the same ruts? What you don't know about yourself can hurt you and your relationships-and even keep you in the shallows with God. The fantasy feminists hate my patriarchal analysis, and the harem fetishists think the book is not sexy enough. This review has been impossible to publish on Reddit. My analysis below will demonstrate how someone who wasn't a bluepilled dadcel would've ascended into a true Dark Lord. To compensate, the quality of writing is much higher than the average harem lit. His wife remarries after he gets isekaid and dies. Another time a handsome masseur exits her room, ambiguously. The badgirl's betrayal is a minor attempt to regain her freedom of will, not a hostile act. Doubtless he will add more in book 2.Īnti-harem themes were limited to a few lines. The protagonist has two (sexually-mature) teenage girl "familiars" so far, and has been awake for about a month. This review covers book 1 the author plans to continue the series. The loyalty the women display is explained by the magical familiar bond, but in real life would be because he's fucking them. The protagonist allegedly doesn't sleep with his familiars. Explicitly harem novels are downvoted severely. The feminists are indulging in harem with plausible deniability, which is amusing. This is the #20 highest-rated book on Royald Road.
